Ottawa winters kill batteries. One that started fine in October can be completely flat the first morning it hits minus twenty, and a dome light left on overnight will do it in any season.

Signs it is the battery

The engine cranks slowly or just clicks. The dashboard lights dim or flicker when you turn the key. The car was fine yesterday and dead this morning after a cold night. Or you left the lights or a charger running.

If the engine cranks normally but will not start, the battery is probably fine and the problem is elsewhere. Tell us what you hear when you turn the key and we will tell you whether a boost is worth trying.

What we do

We bring proper boosting equipment and connect it in the right order, so nothing sparks near the battery and your car’s electronics are protected. Once the engine is running, we check that it stays running.

If the battery is simply discharged, you drive away. Keep driving for at least 20 to 30 minutes so the alternator can put some charge back in, rather than shutting it off at the next stop.

When a boost is not enough

A battery that dies again the moment you shut the engine off needs replacing, not boosting. So does one that is swollen, leaking or more than about five years old. We will tell you honestly if that is what we see.

If the car will not start even with a boost, or starts and then dies, the problem may be the alternator, the starter or the wiring. We can tow it to your mechanic on the same call.

Electric and hybrid vehicles

Hybrids and EVs have a small 12-volt battery as well as the main drive battery, and that small one can go flat just like a regular car’s. Many can be boosted, but the connection points differ by model. Tell us the year, make and model when you call.

What you get

  • A boost where the car sits: driveway, parking lot, roadside or underground garage
  • The right equipment, connected safely for modern electronics
  • An honest answer on whether the battery is finished
  • A tow to your mechanic if a boost will not fix it

Questions about battery boost

  • My car needed a boost twice this week. What does that mean?

Usually a battery at the end of its life, or a charging system not keeping up. We can get you started, but plan on having it tested soon. The third time will probably be in a worse place.

  • Can you boost a car in an underground garage?

Usually, yes. Tell us it is underground when you call, and how low the entrance is.

  • Do you sell or install batteries?

No. We get you started so you can drive to a shop that can test and replace it. If it will not start at all, we can tow it there.

  • How long should I drive after a boost?

At least 20 to 30 minutes of steady driving, if you can. Short trips with the heater and lights on may not put enough charge back in.

  • Can you boost a truck or a van?

Yes. Tell us what it is when you call so we bring the right equipment.
