A vehicle that is stuck is not the same as a vehicle that is broken. If nothing is damaged, all it needs is a straight, careful pull back onto the road, and that costs less than a tow.
Where we pull vehicles out of
Ottawa winters put cars into snowbanks after every storm: at the end of driveways, on unploughed side streets, on rural roads and on highway ramps. Spring and fall do the same with soft gravel shoulders, muddy laneways and fields.
We winch vehicles out of snowbanks and drifts, shallow ditches and roadside slopes, mud and soft shoulders, and icy driveways and lanes where the wheels just spin.

How a winch-out works
We position the truck on firm ground, run the winch line to a proper recovery point on your vehicle (never a bumper or a suspension arm) and pull slowly and straight. Slow matters. A fast yank is how bumpers come off and frames bend.
Once your vehicle is back on the road, we check it over with you: does it steer straight, is anything dragging, are there warning lights. If it drives normally, you carry on. If something is wrong, we can tow it to a shop on the same call.
Before we arrive
Stop spinning the wheels. It digs the vehicle deeper, polishes the ice under the tires and can overheat the transmission. Put your hazards on and, if you are near traffic, wait well away from the road, behind a guardrail if there is one.
If you have to stay in the vehicle in winter, keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow and run the engine only in short bursts for heat. A blocked exhaust can fill the cabin with carbon monoxide.
When it is a recovery, not a winch-out
If the vehicle hit something on the way in, rolled, or is badly damaged, that is accident recovery. Call 911 first if anyone is hurt or the vehicle is blocking traffic.
Tell us these when you call
- Where you are: a location pin from your phone is the most accurate
- What it is stuck in: snow, ditch, mud, ice
- Whether anything hit on the way in
- The vehicle: year, make and model
- How close a truck can get: road, driveway, field
Questions about winch-outs
Is a winch-out cheaper than a tow?
Usually, yes. There is no loading and no transport, and if the vehicle is fine you drive it away yourself.
Will winching damage my car?
Not when it is done properly. We attach to recovery points designed to take the pull, and we pull slowly. Damage comes from chains on bumpers and fast yanks.
My car is only a little stuck. Should I keep trying?
Give it a couple of gentle tries, rocking between drive and reverse. If it is not moving, stop. Spinning only digs it in deeper.
Can you get to a car in a field or off-road?
Often, yes. Tell us how far it is from solid ground when you call, so we can bring enough winch line or tell you honestly if it needs special equipment.
Do you do winch-outs at night and in storms?
Yes, 24 hours a day. During a big storm the whole city is busy, so we give you an honest arrival window.
